Sri Guru Carana Padma

Without caring for his personal comfort and undergoing many austerities, he preached very dynamically and very purely all over the world. The mellifluous nectar emanating from his lotus mouth during his ecstatic kirtans made people dance and cry. His devotional discourses based on Sri Bhaktivedanta purports are full of sastric evidences and exuberant explanations. They inspired people to surrender to the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna in the mood of separation, as taught by Sriman Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

After returning from his European tour in 1992 he had expressed his concern after observing how the Gaudiya Matha were using Srila Prabhupada to attract the members of ISKCON in a dishonest way. They were using Srila Prabhupada's photographs and quotes in the beginning of their books and many other methods. Srila Gurudeva mentioned in his return address in Bhubaneswar that this was a great offence to Srila Prabhupada. He vowed to begin preaching higher teachings in ISKCON to stop the flow of devotees of Srila Prabhupada's society to the Gaudiya Matha and bring pleasure to Srila Prabhupada instead of pain. On many occassions Srila Gour Govinda Swami expressed this sentiment. "You should not go outside ISKCON because if you love Prabhupada, why will you leave Prabhupada and his society? Thereby you leave Prabhupada. Prabhupada will never be pleased, you understand? Prabhupada will never be pleased. If you really love Prabhupada, why you’ll go outside? Inside you’ll get, definitely you’ll get."

A Fearless Preacher

Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja's knowledge of scripture was formidable. He would substantiate everything he said with evidence from all over the Vedic literature. He would always preach fearlessly and would never compromise the conclusions of the scriptures in the name of being practical. During his powerful, informative, heart shattering and devotional lectures, he inspired countless devotees from all over the world. He used every moment of every day to fulfill Srila Prabhupada's desire to preach in every town and village the Holy Name of Krishna.

He is a perfect example of the trnad api sunichena verse. Although very meek and humble in his personal dealings, in his classes he would roar like a lion, smashing the pride and cutting the misconceptions from the hearts and minds of his disciples and followers. His authentic simplicity can be seen by looking at the small mud hut he lived in while he was in Bhubaneswar. His samadhi mandir has been built in the same mud hut.

The pure devotees, vrajavasis, residents of Vrajabhumi are preachers. They go out and preach. For what purpose? pratisthasa-hina- krsna-gatha’ saba. They are not beggars of pratistha. They don’t go out and preach for name, fame and adoration, prestige. Their heart bleeds seeing the suffering heart of the jivas because they are devoid of Krsna consciousness. So they have been suffering. They feel pity for the suffering souls, so they come out, go out and preach. They inculcate Krsna Consciousness, prana ache ta’r, se-hetu pracar, He has life. What is life? Who is life? Krsna is the life. prana ache ta’r, se-hetu. Krsna is the life, jivanam sarva-bhutesu, “I am the life in all living entities.” So vrajabasis, residents of Vrajabhumi, pure devotees they have life because they carry Krsna in their heart. Their heart bleeds seeing the suffering of jivas because they are devoid of Krsna consciousness, bereft of Krsna consciousness. That is suffering, therefore they go out, they don’t go to a solitary place and silently chant. They come to the big cities for preaching krsna-katha.

Sri Nityananda Prema

Every year in Bhubaneswar, on Lord Nityananda’s appearance day he would flood the audience with most nectarean, ecstatic and divine Nityananda prema-bhajans and speak about Lord Nityananda’s nectarean pastimes. During these ecstatic bhajans and lectures, his extreme ecstasy could not be checked. He would make everybody present there dip in the deep, nectarean sweetest ocean of Gauranga prema-data Lord Nityananda’s prema rasa-kathamrta

"If Nityananda Prabhu will shower His mercy then you can have Radha and Krsna in Vrajabhumi. Therefore, clasp the two lotus feet of Nityananda Prabhu, tightly, tightly! Otherwise how can you get the mercy of Nityananda? How can you get Radha Krsna in Vrajabhumi? This is the goal of your human life. Without Nityananda's mercy there is no hope at all. This is what Narottama dasa Thakura says." (from a commentary of Nitai pada kamala.)

Divine Disappearance

Lord Caitanya said to Srila Ramananda Raya and Svarupa Damodara Goswami: “Love of Godhead, devoid of cheating propensities, is not possible within this material world. If there is such a love, there cannot be separation, for if there is separation, how can one live.” (Cc. Madhya, 2.42)

Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja had been delayed on his annual trip to Sri Mayapur Dham for the GBC meetings in 1996 due to the Srila Prabhupada Centennial celebrations in Orissa. Just a few days before arriving in Mayapur he had taken darsan of his beloved Sri Sri Radha Gopaljiu in Gadei Giri before embarking on his trip. Now in Mayapur, devotees were coming to take darsan of Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja in his guest house room every evening.
